From Swinging London to Punk, 81-103 King’s Road played a key role in two of the greatest youth movements of the 20th Century. Inspired by botanical influences, this project re-introduces green elements into this historic streetscape through a glass menagerie punctuating the refined fluted brick façade.

The intersection of King Road-Plakate and Story Road was the heart of car cruising in the 1970s and ’80s, when hundreds of young people would drive their customized cars down the corridor. It was also the home of the Tropicana nightclub, a hot spot for local Latino music and culture.

In recent years, the street has become a hub for restaurants, cafes, and shops. Sloane Square and Duke of York Square anchor the area, and the streets surrounding them are packed with stores. The area is also close to Imperial Wharf station on the London Overground network, with services to Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction.

In addition to big-name chains like Peter Jones, there are plenty of smaller boutiques and independent shops. The western end of King’s Road is close to Imperial Wharf railway station on the London Overground network. The station has direct rail services to Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction. It is also served by Southern rail trains to Milton Keynes Central and East Croydon.

The street was at the epicentre of two worldwide cultural shifts in the sixties and seventies. It was a hub for the new'swinging' London, with fashion, theatre and music all having their turn in the spotlight. From John Lennon in Mary Quant's 15 guinea hat to Mick Jagger hanging out with the Sex Pistols, it's a tale of satisfaction and sedition. The road has even been name-checked in songs by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Pet Shop Boys.
